I Tried Back Pilates: Here’s What I Learned

For years, I’ve been dealing with on-and-off back pain, so when I came across the BackAware Back Pilates program, I was eager to give it a try. I had heard of back pain and tried some YouTube videos but never really gave it a proper go. Over the course of 8 weeks, I embarked on this BackAware Back Pilates program, and I want to share my experience and what I learned.

Example of some of the exercises from the Back Pilates Program

Discovering the Importance of the Right Exercises:

Throughout the years, I had attempted various stretches to alleviate my back pain, but none had provided lasting relief. What surprised me was the effectiveness of the 5-minute morning routine recommended in the Back Pilates program. This routine, performed right after waking up, made a significant difference in setting my back up for the day.

By taking a free quiz, I learned that my back pain was likely due to disc irritation, something I had never been informed about before. The program’s subsequent emails and articles provided valuable guidance on managing this issue.

Anyone can take this quiz (you don’t have to be part of the program) so I definitely recommend trying it out.

Exercising with Correct Form:

Through the Back Pilates program, I came to understand the importance of strengthening my core and glutes to alleviate back pain. The program provided follow-along videos, and the BackAware Belt proved immensely helpful in ensuring I maintained proper form during exercises. This real-time feedback was particularly valuable, as I had often been uncertain about whether I was performing exercises correctly in the past. By simply pressing play and following along with the videos, I didn’t have to worry about keeping track of sets or other exercises.

Accountability and Group Support:

In the past, despite my best intentions, I struggled to commit to the daily exercises prescribed by my physiotherapist. However, the Back Pilates program addressed this challenge by including participants in a WhatsApp group where we would post when we completed our classes. With classes lasting only 35 minutes (with an optional 10-minute bonus), it was a manageable commitment. While it could be a bit annoying at times, the check-ins and group accountability greatly helped me stay consistent.

Better Awareness of my back day to day:

One thing I really liked about the program is that I feel they try to educate you about your back pain. As I mentioned there are emails and you have weekly Q and A’s with the instructor to ask questions. Using the BackAware Belt allows you to be more aware of your posture during the day and I have found myself lifting and sitting better.

This wasn’t just me in our group a lot of the members were saying similar things.

Needing to do things outside of Back Pilates:

The Back Pilates once per week was very manageable but I got a lot more out of the program than just the Pilates. Dr. Eoin Everard really tries to educate you on how to look after your back during the day from helpful tips on how to lift and sit correctly, to showing really good releases with a massage ball for your hips (this really helped free out my back). I don’t know how long the bonuses are included but the piece of equipment for at my desk and the massage ball were really nice touches.
